Q: TA37S - Hilux Fitment
Although we don't sell this tank for fitment to this vehicle we have had the odd customer who has done a custom install.
To make it fit there will be small changes required from our instructions, but the following are the two main considerations:
1/ A new cross member at the front needs to be made for tank mounting. The coil sprung 4runner has an extra cross member which we use.
2/ The filler T piece is the wrong diameter as the 4runner has 41mm hose, were as the hilux has 50mm.

A: Although this smaller tank is designed to accommodate the carbon canister found on the petrol models it will still fit the diesel but is a dearer option and takes a little longer to fit with additional items in the standard fitting kit such as transfer pump, twin filler, sender unit, gauge & switch unit. But is ideal if you required a separate fuel storage solution that can be filled separately and transferred to the main tank when you decide.

A: During the design stage we analyse all the factors to come up with the best fuel tank solution for each vehicle.
As vehicle manufacturers finely tune their design it becomes more important with a modern car to consider such items as chassis strength and extra weight to be added. Also considered in the design stage are manufacturing processes and even packaging and freight which are all taken into account.
With the D40 Navara range of tanks we chose an auxiliary tank over a full replacement so as to have less impact on vehicle reliability & function. Rather than add a large 140lt replacement steel tank on the petrol we have chosen to add an auxiliary tank which weighs approximately half the weight of a full replacement tank, but still giving the same total fuel capacity.
We have also added an extra mounting cross member for the tank to evenly distribute the weight over a larger section of the vehicle chassis.

Q: TA61D - How do I use the fuel from this auxiliary tank
Fuel Usage

A: The short answer is you just drive, it�s that easy!
We have designed this system by keeping the operation simple, with no electrical fuel pumps or switches required both tanks fill and drain as if you had one big tank. During filling the fuel simply enters the auxiliary and overflows into the main tank via the factory filler hose until both are filled. At approximately 80mm up from the bottom we install a low pressure hydraulic line in a well protected recess at the rear of the main tank, while driving along fuel simply drains into the main tank though this line by gravity. As the two tanks are linked together the gauge now reads the combined contents of both.
We would also like to point out that approximately 35L of fuel in the new auxiliary tank is above the top of the main tank so all this fuel will need to be used before the gauge will start to move off of full.

Why does the fuel gauge take so long to move when checking fuel level in Aux Tank?

A: The Pajero gauge has been dampened to avoid erratic movement with fuel sloshing around. This results in a very slow needle movement and may take 15 minutes or so to move after changing tanks whist still driving. If you change tanks and then turn the ignition off and back on again it will give a faster reading, this should not be done while driving.

A: The short answer is NO we do not recommend fitment of a TR27 in a leaf sprung Cab Chassis
Although the tank will actually fit in the vehicle, the rear spring bolts are a little close to our tank and may cause problems if they contact the tank

Are the GQ replacement tanks interchangeable into a GU?

A: The short answer: No
The long answer: The fuel pump, breathers etc are all the same or similar.
The bracket mounting is the same. (we even use the same jig to put the brackets on)
But unfortunately due to a different floor pan the top of the tank is a different shape.
So when trying to fit a GQ tank into a GU the tank wont fit up against the mounts and would hang down another 40mm if spacers were made.
The tank would fit into a GU coil cab chassis model as there is no floor pan.

A: Because the new tank is approximately 4 times bigger than the original, the capacity when the warning light comes on is also considerably larger. EG: On the std tank when the light comes on there would be approx 12 L & 35mm depth of fuel. In the LongRanger fuel tank. this same 35mm of fuel would represent approx 30L.
As you can see by this

diagram the float is setup to be almost touching the bottom of the tank during the installation, although it is a little higher than the actual bottom due to the shape for improved departure angle.
With this new length, the float will travel from the top of the tank to the bottom.
It is possible to shorten the float a bit more than our recommended length and have a better reading on empty by bending the arm down a little more, but this means the tank will register full for a considerable amount of traveling before moving.

A: The tank will not fit without modification, we have introduced a new tank, Part number TR53R for the 4x4 Mazda BT or 4wd Ford Ranger which are designed to fit straight in without modification.
However if you are a bit handy and want to save a few dollars, Two things need to be done to make it fit.
1) Remove or modify one of the hanger brackets on the muffler.
2) The leaf springs are longer on the new model vehicles, which means a new divot on the side of the LongRanger fuel tank will need to be put in place to line up with the front spring bolt.

Q: TR55 - Capacity Discrepancy For Same Part Number Tank In Different Model Defenders
Why does the TR55 Defender tank have a capacity of 127L in the pre 10/2007 TD5 models and only 120L capacity in the post 10/2007 TD4 models?

A: A big answer, but here is how it works.
The new 2.4L 4cyl diesel (puma) model with a factory 75L tank fitted has an undocumented 5L reserve built in to give a total tank capacity of 80L. The low warning light comes on with approx 12L left in the tank, as the needle hits the empty mark there is approximately 9L left. The vehicle will continue to travel until using this remaining 12L, (this leaves the 5L reserve left). The vehicle will now go into limp mode (an induced misfire). Once in limp mode you can drive for 1.6km and the vehicle will shut down. You can then restart and drive for another 1.6km etc until you actually do run out of fuel, which is not recommended and can be a very costly exercise.
Land rover has designed the new model to go into limp mode to protect the high-pressure fuel pump, which will not last long without any fuel lubricating it. In addition as there is no manual lift pump on the vehicle fuel system a small service tool (special vacuum lift pump) will be required to bleed the vehicle after running the fuel system completely dry (or changing fuel filter etc).

We have listed below two examples of why there is more fuel in the bottom of The LongRanger tank, which simply cannot be used because the tank is proportionally bigger all-round including the bottom, which has a larger surface area and square corners when compared to the factory tank.

Example 1: Factory 75L tank has 12L left once the low warning light comes on. Once triggered by the low warning light, the vehicle goes into limp mode after using the remaining 12L of fuel, leaving only the 5L reserve left to ensure the fuel system is not run dry.

Example 2: The LongRanger Tank being proportionally bigger has approximately 19L left once the low warning light comes on, but the vehicle still goes into limp mode after using approximately another 12L, this leaves approximately 7L of fuel unusable under normal driving conditions in the bottom of the tank.

In the previous model defender it was possible to continue to drive and use the extra few litres built into The LongRanger after the low warning light came on without actually running out of fuel.

As we have designed the pickup and the float on the sender unit to be at the very bottom of the tank there is little can be done to improve the situation without simply making a bigger and lower tank, which would compromise departure angle, and off road performance.

Q: TR55 - Noisy Fuel Pump
After fitment of The Long Ranger fuel tank to a Diesel Defender, the fuel pump makes an unusual noise.

A: This noise will slowly disappear over a few hundred Klms. We are unsure why this happens, but there has also been a case of a fuel tank being installed and operated for a couple of years in a vehicle and the simple replacement of the battery caused the same symptoms.

Q: TR59 - Can't use all the fuel
Why can I only use about 50lt of fuel in the tank when I should be able to use 70lt?

A: During the installation the pickup and the sender unit float needs to be lengthened for the new tank. If either of these isn�t done correctly the full capacity of the tank will not be utilised. A common problem is for the float to be to far from the bottom. As a result when the gauge for the sub tank reads empty the pump is automatically switched off, this leaves additional fuel in the bottom of the tank.

A: To date we have had customers report that the TR59 Nissan GU long range fuel tank will fit with 5 inch spring lift using both King springs & Mega lift. Their vehicles have been fitted with rear bars, draw unit and the TR45 main replacement fuel tank.

A: After fitment of sub tank a check light comes on the dash, the vehicle was most likely started whilst the tank was removed. The error code will need to be cleared. This can be done by a Nissan dealer or by - removing the sub tank fuse. This can be found up in behind the cigarette lighter, after removing the centre console and removing an electrical module you will find the fuse - We have also had reports of people disconnecting their battery for a minimum of 15 seconds has also found to be successful

Q: TR60 - Holden Rodeo 2007 RA (3 litre common rail) model runs out of fuel with plenty left in tank.
why does the vehicle run out of fuel with the gauge still reading a 1/4 after fitment of long range tank

A: the 2007 RA model has two fuel pumps and it is possible to connect the pickup and return lines around the wrong way and the vehicle still drive OK. This actually means the vehicle is only running on the main pump up near the engine and not utilising the in tank primer pump. So when the fuel level reaches about 1/4 of a tank (70mm in depth), it runs out of fuel because the return line doesn't go to the bottom of the tank.

A: TR60D / TR60FI - You are most likely using a two post hoist and the axle has dropped down and forward. Either jack the rear wheels up or use a 4 post hoist.

Will The Tank Fit 2WD & 4WD Models?

A: Although the 2WD V6 is based on a 4WD chassis it only has 5 leaves in the spring pack as opposed to the 7 leaves in the 4WD model. This can result in the tail shaft hitting the tank when overloading occurs.
We are in the process of developing Part# TR60FIA for the 2WD V6 model, which is a little smaller in capacity, as it has 20mm more ground clearance and more tail shaft clearance. This tank would also be suitable for a 4WD V6 owner who wants a little more ground clearance for more rugged off-road use

I can drive for a long time before the gauge starts to move from full.

A: The new tank is approximately 2 times bigger than the original, and the shape is a little unusual with the water tank included. With such a design the sender unit location is limited and is unable to register the top portion of fuel. With this in mind we recommend to set your trip meter to help become familiar with the new readings and measure the distance you travel till the gauge starts to move, this will be consistent and will only vary with different fuel economy because of driving conditions E.G.: low range 4WD all day vs. highway roads

No, the locker fouls on the new long range tank.
As we have not seen these fitted to Australian spec models we are unable to manufacture a hilux tank to suit, but we do know our long range fuel tanks have been fitted to overseas models with some modification to the actual tank shape.

Q: TR63 - Slow Filling With Trayback
The original steel filler neck on the hilux does not lend itself very well to being lowered.
Whether the standard fuel tank or a LongRanger is installed, when a tray is fitted the installer has no choice but to lower the filler neck to below the tray floor. Unfortunately this causes a low section where fuel can lay and cause an air lock when filling.

Q: TR63 - Fuel Gauge Reading
Because The LongRanger is deeper taking advantage of extra space and we have baffles we are unable to extend the float length to assist with better accuracy as the longer float would foul on the side of tank or baffles.

A: Due to the shape of The LongRanger Tank there is approximately 30L of fuel above the full mark, the fuel gauge will stay on full for some time until this extra fuel is used.
Once it does start to move from the full mark, it will slowly move to empty.
We recomend to set the trip meter the first few tank fills to help get used to the new readings
This will be consistant with every tank full.
